The Church of The Miracle

The church, consecrated in 1241, initially being called the Church of Saint Stephen. Since its founding, the temple hosted the headquarters of the parish of St. Stephen, one of the most important and wealthiest of the then town of Santarém. This parish was to be extinct in the nineteenth century, and then integrated into the Marvila. In 1266, with the occurrence of the Miracle, the temple came to be known as Blessed Miracle, welcoming thereafter the sacred relics.

Legend of the Miracle that a woman had stolen a wafer consecrated during communion, intending to use it in witchcraft practices. However, the host bled all the way and a hidden time, flooded with light all over the room, revealing its presence and leading the sinner to repentance. The miraculous Host was crimped on a silver custody, remain stored in the temple today, except for the short period of the Napoleonic wars, when it was removed from the city.

The current Renaissance setting of the church is the result of a sixteenth-century reconstruction campaign, carried out between 1536 and 1547, and was motivated by the scale of the damage caused by the earthquake of 1531. The remarks followed other, Mannerist and Baroque, in centuries XVII and XVIII, which resulted, in addition to the depreciation of part of the sixteenth century work, the coating polychrome tiles, the choir and the golden engravings, these the first half of the eighteenth century.

The Church of the Holy Miracle, also known as St. Stephen's Church, is located in the historic center of Santarém, in Marvila parish. This temple, founded in the thirteenth century, it acquired its current aspect largely Renaissance in the sixteenth century as a result of destruction caused by an earthquake. The church was renamed the current name after the occurrence of the Most Holy Miracle, in 1266, in the parish who then had to host.
