The Holy Miracle occurred in Santarem, in the thirteenth century and is still today the subject of intense worship in the city.
It was the year 1266 (or 1247, according to some chroniclers) when, in Santarem, a poor woman lived, who her husband really mistreated, walking astray with another. Tired of suffering, he was asking a witch who, with their spells, put an end to their sad fate. Promised him this effective medicine, but require a consecrated host. After hesitating, the poor woman went to St. Stephen's Church, pleaded and received the Holy Particle, with extreme caution took her mouth, wrapping it in the veil. Quickly left the church, heading for the house of the witch. But then, without her noticing, the veil began to drip blood,
which, seen by several people, led them to ask the
unfortunate that injury had. Confused in the extreme, runs home and closes the Host Miracle in a chest. He spent the day, however, and later returned her husband. Already in late at night, wake
them, and see all the bright home. The ark came out mysterious rays of light. Aware man's sinful act of the woman, kneeling, spent the rest of the night in worship.
Barely broke the day, was the parish priest informed the supernatural prodigy. Spread the news, half Santarém rushed hurried to contemplate the miracle. Sacred Particle was then taken in procession to the Church of St. Stephen, where he was kept in a kind of custody made of wax. But after a few years (in 1340), while opening up the tabernacle to expose the adoration of the faithful, as usual, made the wax was found in pieces and, in amazement, it turned out that the Holy Particle stood closed a crystal ampoule, miraculously appeared. This small ampule was placed in a gilded silver monstrance where today is.
The Parish Church of St. Stephen is currently the
Holy Sanctuary Miracle. Since the occurrence of the miracle,
this church was landing numerous processions, made by the royal court, or great personalities of the nobility and clergy, especially the pretext of diseases, floods or drought. There
are many echoes, documentary, were in as a witness, as the case of Queen Isabel, who through Santarém en route to Coimbra in order to pacify the quarrels between her husband D. Dinis and his son
Alfonso, sent make a procession of prayers, where she accompanied the Blessed Miracle barefoot with a rope around his neck and covered with ashes, so imploring the mercy of the Most High. Also
Alfonso VI, the January 25, 1664, to travel to Santarem, did not fail to visit the Church of the Holy Miracle and the Convent of St. Dominic, where by that time, it kept the mysterious towel that
had involved the Sacred Host and in which the blood was still visible. In the place where stood the house of the poor woman, is today the Chapel of the Miracle.
